Most people don’t use their porcelain or ceramic china daily. Before you move your dishes to a storage unit to free up cabinet space, though, clean them thoroughly. Otherwise, dust, dirt, and superficial staining can permeate the surface over time, causing permanent discoloration.

How to Perform a Basic Cleaning

Using a microfiber cloth, gently wipe off your china. Then, use a soft-bristled brush to dislodge debris from any ornamental holes or crevices. Finally, wash the dishes in warm—not hot—water using a mild detergent. Just be sure to line the sink with folded towels or rubber mats before getting started to prevent nicks and cracks if you accidentally bump the sides or bottom while you work. Rinse the bubbles off in warm water that’s roughly the same temperature—applying cold water suddenly could cause cracking—and lay out the china on paper towels to dry.

How to Remove Stubborn Stains

Since you shouldn’t use bleach or harsh household cleaning products because they could damage the finish, start with baking soda. It’s abrasive enough to remove surface stains but gentle enough to preserve the paint or polish.

If baking soda doesn’t work, try mixing equal parts of salt and vinegar and then soak the stained dish in the solution for up to an hour before washing it as usual. If that doesn’t work, a peroxide-based china cleaner that’s specially formulated for porcelain or ceramic may work.
