Antidepressants are divided into groups based on how they affect the neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that influence brain activity, including emotions, behaviors, and physical functions. Psychiatrists prescribe specific medications based on their patients' unique symptoms. Here are some of the common prescription categories for patients with depression.

3 Types of Antidepressants

1. SSRIs

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors like Paxil®, Lexapro®, and Prozac® work by limiting the reuptake of serotonin. This brain chemical is responsible for regulating mood, behavior in social situations, and sleep patterns.

By inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, these prescriptions allow the chemical to stay in the brain for longer periods, resulting in positive adjustments to your emotions and behaviors. Some people may experience side effects such as insomnia, nausea, sexual dysfunction, and increased anxiety.

2. SNRIs

depressionIn addition to serotonin, SNRIs limit the reabsorption of norepinephrine. This brain chemical can improve motor function, such as hand motions, and your ability to stay alert. It also controls your heart rate and blood pressure.

If a patient’s movements and reactions were slowed by SSRIs, norepinephrine could help them stay alert. People taking SNRIs like Savella®, Effexor®, and Cymbalta® may experience constipation, nausea, dry mouth, and fatigue.

3. TCAs

Tricyclic antidepressants are named for their three rings of atoms, and they were one of the first antidepressants on the market. They target both serotonin and norepinephrine, but they prevent the absorption of these chemicals into nerve cells instead of limiting their turnover.

TCAs also inhibit the absorption of acetylcholine, which affects autonomic nervous system responses such as muscle contractions, heart rate, and blood vessel dilation. Elavil®, Asendin®, Vivactil®, and other TCAs are less commonly prescribed than the other forms. Side effects may include dizziness, blurred vision, and heartbeat irregularity.
