While you do everything possible to care for your dog and monitor their health, you should recognize the indicators of heartworm disease. This is a widespread condition that causes uncomfortable and potentially dangerous symptoms. If your dog displays one or more of the signs below, see a veterinarian promptly to receive the appropriate medications and prevent worsening illness.

What Are Some Symptoms of Heartworms?

1. Dry Cough

There are four stages of heartworm disease, all of which share only one common symptom. A dry cough typically arises when the parasites are affecting the dog’s lungs. In the first stage of the disease, the cough may be relatively minor. However, as it progresses, the cough will be more noticeable and accompanied by other symptoms, such as tiredness after minimal activity. In dogs suffering from later-stages of heartworm disease, their cough will be more persistent and heavy.

2. Notable Lethargy

veterinarianDogs tire quickly as the parasites responsible for the disease overwhelm the lungs. If you notice that your furry friend isn’t as active as before, doesn’t seem interested in going outside for walks, or otherwise behaves differently, have a veterinarian take a look. If they suspect heartworms, they will perform a microfilariae, which is a blood slide test. X-ray may be done if there is a sign of fluid on the lungs. Many conditions can cause weakness, but significant changes in physical activity levels are noteworthy and may grow more severe as the disease progresses.

3. Fast Breathing

Heartworms cause fluid to accumulate in the body and may prevent blood from flowing normally. This can cause breathing to become more labored in the later stages of the disease, preventing your furry friend from catching their breath. Impacted dogs may have trouble breathing, or they may breathe more rapidly than usual.

4. Protruding Chest

Sometimes heartworms can also cause the dog’s ribcage to extend outward. This protruding may occur because of fluid buildup, but may also develop in response to rapid weight loss. The distension can progress to the belly, which will swell if the dog suffers from heart failure. If you notice this, take your dog to a veterinarian for a checkup immediately.
