In most American homes, dryers are essential appliances. However, with so many factors to consider when choosing your own, such as capacity, efficiency, cost, and dry time, it’s difficult to know which one is best for your home. Consider the following types to make an informed decision.

What Are Common Types of Dryers?

1. Gas Dryer

A gas dryer employs gas to heat the tumbler in your dryer. Thus, it will use less electricity than other appliances. While gas dryers might cost more upfront, they often save you money in the long run. However, if there isn’t a gas line in your laundry room, the price of installing one will likely eliminate any real savings.

Typically, the dryer can carry up to around 19 pounds in wet weight. It’s known to heat your clothes faster than an electric dryer. Because a gas dryer requires a vent, it might not be suitable for an apartment.

2. Condenser Dryer

applianceA condenser dryer will extract water vapor from hot air around the machine and send it through a condenser to heat it. The condenser then moves the warm air into the drum to dry your clothes. Cool, damp air is pushed out, through the condenser, and is thus converted to water to be kept in a holding tank or released through a drainage hose.

These dryers won't create humidity in your laundry room. Also, because they don't require as much ventilation as other dryers, like tumble dryers, you will have more flexibility about where you place the dryer. They produce lower temperatures, which are easier on fabrics.

3. Heat Pump Dryer

A heat pump dryer is extremely energy-efficient and can lower your utility bills. Hot air passes through the drum, where the evaporator removes moisture. The moisture is stored as condensation, while the air is reheated and recycled to dry your clothes. This process occurs continuously throughout the cycle.

Like a condenser dryer, a heat pump dryer requires a drainage hose or holding tank, and will likely take longer to dry your clothes than a vented dryer.
