Drain fields are where treated waste is released from your septic tank and returned to the soil. They’re one of the most overlooked aspects of septic care, and complications can lead to waste backflow and other problems. It’s important to recognize common issues to ensure you address them early and take preventive steps.

4 Common Septic Drain Field Issues

1. Compressed Soil

When the soil in your drain field is too compressed, waste won’t be able to pass through or be fully processed. This often happens when homeowners drive over or build on top of the drain field.

If this occurs, waste can be pushed back into your septic tank. The resulting pressure could also force waste back into your home or cause cracks in your tank. If you have concerns about compressed soil, consider renting a soil aerator to loosen the ground.

2. Tree Roots

Planting trees or deep-rooted vegetation on or near the drain field will eventually create problems as thirsty roots grow downward in search of water. Roots can break into your tank or sewer line and create serious clogs and waste leaks.

Trees should be located 1 foot away from the drain field and septic tank for every foot that it is tall. A 20-foot tree, for example, should be at least 20 feet away.

3. Too Much Sludge

When waste isn’t treated as efficiently, excess sludge may be pushed from the tank and clog the drain field. Never pour chemicals down the drain, including septic cleaning products. Leave any cleaning job exclusively to the professionals.

4. Oversaturation

Whether it’s from water leaks or heavy rains, too much water in the soil will keep the drain field from doing its job. Monitor the area for standing water. Make sure gutter downspouts are pointed away from the drain field, and, if needed, dig a trench to drive water toward a municipal drain.
