If you have pets, you’ve likely encountered fleas. However, even homes without furry friends can face a flea infestation. These insects multiply quickly, regardless of how clean you keep your home, and although humans rarely get sick from fleas, they can carry disease. At the very least, flea bites are itchy and unpleasant. Unfortunately, fleas can be hard to get rid of, and usually require a visit from the exterminator, but you can prevent them from getting inside in the first place.

A Homeowner’s Guide to Flea Infestations

What are fleas?

Fleas are parasitic insects that are most likely to be found on animals, especially wild ones. Adult fleas are about 2.5 mm long, dark-brown or reddish-brown, and have six long legs. They don't have wings, but they can jump. However, if you have fleas, that also means you have flea eggs and larvae. The white eggs are about the size of a grain of sand. At the larvae stage, they resemble small white caterpillars.

How do fleas get in your home?

The most common way that fleas can get into your home is on your pets. Fleas live outdoors, and when your dog or cat goes outside without proper preventive treatments, the fleas will jump on them to feed and lay eggs. Fleas can also come in on your clothing or shoes, or be on pests like mice. And if you’ve recently moved into a new home, the previous tenants may have left fleas behind.

How can I prevent fleas?

exterminatorBecause your pets are the most likely source of a flea infestation, talk with your veterinarian about treatments to keep the parasites away. Regular grooming and checking for fleas can help catch infestations before they spread. Regularly wash pet bedding in hot water, and vacuum often to remove any eggs or larvae that might be hiding in carpets or upholstery. When you move into a new place, consider having an exterminator inspect and treat the house before you move in to eliminate any pests that were left behind.

How can I get rid of fleas?

If you have a flea infestation, it’s very difficult to get rid of them completely without the help of an exterminator. Professional treatments will eliminate the bugs at all stages of life. And again, wash bedding and soft surfaces in hot water, vacuum, and use readily available insect inhibitors to limit the infestation. Acting quickly to contain the spread can prevent a severe infestation.
