Long-term goals should focus on accomplishments you’d like to achieve within the next few months. This can include sharpening your hand-eye coordination and building discipline and confidence.

2. Build Community

Participating in a group gives you a solid foundation for your practice by providing moral support and encouragement while working toward common goals. If you’re an introvert, working alongside a familiar face can help you stay motivated. Aside from giving you an extra sense of comfort, a friend or family member can hold you accountable for sticking to a routine. Adding another fun activity alongside your self-defense session, like grabbing a pre-workout smoothie or scheduling a post-workout movie date together, can also push you to attend classes.

4. Focus on Your Health

Your self-defense course may only be a one- or two-hour-long weekly commitment, but that’s plenty of time to stay in shape. Getting at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity every week helps maintain weight, build endurance, and improve cardiovascular health. Since your metabolism slows down and muscle mass decreases as you age, it’s important to continue working out as you get older.
