Birth control can be an important part of reproductive health. However, whether you decide you want to become pregnant or you have an underlying health issue, your gynecologist might recommend going off of your birth control. Whether you stop consuming the pill or take the patch off, expect your body to experience a few changes.

How Your Body Might Change When You Go off Birth Control

1. Your Menstrual Cycle Will Change

Birth control regulates your menstrual cycle. When you go off birth control, you might notice that your periods are less predictable and regular. Additionally, you might have a heavier flow or more cramping during your period, since birth control can help with these problems. Your cycle will likely be very similar to what it was before you started taking birth control.

2. Pregnancy Chances Will Increase

About half of women get pregnant within the first three months after stopping birth control pills, and most will become pregnant within 12 months. If you are going off birth control but still don’t want to get pregnant, make sure to use other methods, such as condoms.

3. PMS Symptoms Will Become Pronounced

Birth control pills and other methods regulate the hormones in your body. In many cases, this helps decrease the symptoms of PMS, such as depression, anxiety, and irritability.

Once you go off your normal birth control method, you’ll likely notice your PMS symptoms return to where they were before you started treatment. This could include stronger cramps or longer cycles. To manage cramp symptoms, place a heating pad on your stomach or take over-the-counter painkillers.

4.  Acne May Return

Your birth control might keep your skin clear due to the regulation of hormones. This perk may stop when you decide to go off birth control.

Most birth control pills reduce a hormone in your body called androgen, which is responsible for producing skin oil. If you’re prone to hormonal acne, you’ll notice spots again. However, there are other ways to treat your pimples, including using a facial cleanser and an exfoliating scrub.
