While having experienced legal counsel is important in helping you navigate divorce law, handling the matter at home is an entirely different situation. Specifically, talking to your children about a separation can feel daunting. Although the conversation may not be easy, here are a few ways to promote a productive and smooth discussion with them.

How to Discuss Divorce With Your Children

1. Plan the Conversation in Advance

The goal of divorce law is to facilitate separations as amicably as possible. However, the same goes for the conversation you have with your children. To maintain a unified front, be sure to speak with your spouse in advance to determine when and where you’ll approach the subject, and how much you’ll share with the kids.

2. Keep Emotions in Check

It’s easy to get upset when discussing your divorce, but try to keep your emotions to a minimum for your children’s sake. If you become overly emotional, they’ll be more likely to perceive the split as a bad thing, when in reality, it’s the right choice for everyone. Instead, focus strictly on the facts by telling them what’s happening and what to expect.

3. Help Them See the Benefits

divorce lawAt first, the news will understandably be upsetting to your children. Yet, you can help them see the benefits by explaining what will change, such as there will be new harmony among you and your former spouse when marital strains are no longer an issue.

4. Discuss What Won’t Change

You can also put your children’s minds at ease by discussing what won’t be different. If your children will be able to stay in the same school system, highlight this benefit. In addition, reassure them that your love for them will still be the same.

5. Encourage Future Conversation

Just as the divorce law process is sometimes an ongoing matter, you’ll likely need to revisit your children’s emotions regularly, too. Let them know that both you and their other parent will always be available to talk, and invite them to share their feelings.
