Southern summers are no laughing matter. To find comfort, most homeowners need a properly working air conditioner. Unfortunately, your AC unit must work hard to take on this season, which can result in wear and tear that possibly requires a repair. Below are a few problems that are most likely to occur so that you can fix them quickly.

Which AC Issues Should You Look for During Summer?

1. Clogged Condensate Drain Line

In addition to cooling your home, the air conditioner also dehumidifies it by transferring moisture outdoors through the condensate line. Without regular cleaning, dirt, algae, and other debris can clog this line and trap the moisture before it can leave the house.

A clogged condensate line will allow water to build up. Eventually, the cold air in the AC will freeze the moisture and increase the size of the blockage, potentially rupturing the drain. You might notice puddles of water around the outside unit and reduced cooling inside your home if this issue arises.

2. Low Refrigerant Levels

Unless you use a heat pump year-round, the refrigerant is only relevant when you turn your AC on for the season. The air conditioner uses this liquid to cool the hot air in your home. If there is a leak in the refrigerant line, you’ll notice the air exiting your vents warming up each day.

ACFortunately, an air conditioning contractor can add more refrigerant to the system and restore the cold air. However, this is not a permanent fix, and the coolant will continue to leak until you repair the line. Also, you should not add refrigerant yourself, as it is toxic and requires proper handling.

3. Frozen Evaporator Coil

When the refrigerant flows inside the outdoor condenser, it passes through the evaporator coil, where it collects the heat from the air passing over the coil. If the airflow is limited in this area, the coil could freeze. When this happens, the refrigerant cannot remove the heat, resulting in warm air blowing into the home.

If you see frost or ice forming on the condenser, never chip or hammer it away. Instead, clean the area around the unit to prevent debris from blocking the airflow. Then, turn the unit off for about two hours to let the sun melt the ice before you use it again. If this does not work, you may need a technician to inspect for more significant issues.
