Like most cosmetic treatments, hair coloring requires upkeep. Whether it’s bright pink or a natural auburn, when your hair is dyed, you’ll need to make some adjustments to your routine to maintain its vibrance. If you aren’t doing so already, here are some tips for preserving the color for as long as possible.

How to Preserve Your Hair Coloring

1. Wash Your Hair Every Other Day

Like other dyes, the more often hair coloring is washed, the sooner it will fade. To avoid this, at the very least, wash your hair every other day. If you can wait longer, that’s even better.

If you’re worried about your hair getting greasy in between washes, use dry shampoo instead. Note, this does not apply to hair that’s been freshly dyed. In this instance, it’s best to wait three days before washing it.

2. Use the Right Products

This is a detergent commonly found in many personal cleaning products, due to its ability to foam up and wash away oil.  The natural oils of your hair are essential for locking in both moisture and hair dye. Without the oil, the cuticle layer of hair dries out and opens up slightly, making it easier for the dye to wash away.

If you’re unsure what to use, consult your stylist. Hair coloring professionals want to see their work preserved, so they’ll usually have a list of products they recommend.

3. Minimize Exposure to Heat

In addition to curbing your hair’s exposure to excess water and sulfate-heavy shampoo, you’ll want to cut down on how much heat it endures. Whether it’s from the showerhead, hairdryer, straightener, or curling iron, high heat can negatively affect the dye by making it fade or change color.

When washing or rinsing your hair, use lukewarm or cold water and let it air dry. When you need to straighten or curl it, use a heat protectant spray or serum beforehand.
