Modern sewing machines are built to serve a variety of fabric types and sewing methods, allowing you to create an endless assortment of goods, including garments and quilts. With so many sewing styles to choose from, it can be difficult to know which stitch to choose, especially if you're new to sewing. Use the following guide to learn three of the most common sewing machine stitches.

A Guide to Sewing Machine Stitches

1. Straight Stitch

The straight stitch is a go-to for most common sewing projects. It’s versatile and available on all modern sewing machines and can be used for a variety of different seam types, including plain seams, hairline seams, and French seams.

It can also be used for tucks, darts, and topstitching to create a tailored look on garments. Depending on your needs, the stitch length can be adjusted from zero to six millimeters.

2. Blind Hem Stitch

This stitch can be performed as a straight blind stitch or a stretch blind stitch, depending on the fabric you choose. For instance, stretch stitches should be used with stretchier materials, such as Lycra® or spandex. Straight blind hems are better suited for non-stretch fabrics.

3. Zigzag Stitch

Zigzag stitches are more utilitarian and can be used to seam or hem knit fabrics, encase raw seam edges, add trim, or attach lace. To create this stitch, you’ll need a pressure foot with a wider hole than those used to create straight stitches.

The stitch width can be adjusted according to your project or the fabric you're working with. Narrow zigzag stitches used with knits or stretch materials will stretch with the fabric, while wider stitches will prevent fraying in more delicate fabrics.
