When you need custom glass installations for automobiles or heavy equipment, you’ll want products that offer optimal insulation and energy efficiency. R- and U-values are important to consider when it comes to heat transfer and overall thermal performance. Below, you’ll learn more about the differences between these two rating systems and how to select the right glass for your needs.

What’s the Difference Between R-Value & U-Value?

R-Value

R-Value refers to the resistance of glass to heat transfer. The higher the R-value, the stronger the insulation. In other words, custom glass with a high R-value will keep heat from escaping your vehicle during the winter or entering it during the summer.

This maintains indoor temperatures and takes stress off of your HVAC system, which conserves energy and saves money on utilities. To get a sense of scale, the average single-pane window has an R-value of about 1, compared to triple-pane windows with argon gas fillings, which have R-values of 6 or higher. When you need auto glass replacements, select glazing with a high R-value to prevent heat transfer.

U-Value

To measure them, divide the R-value by one. For instance, a window with an R-value of 5 would have a U-value of 0.2. For your custom glass installation, choose products with a low U-value to increase efficiency.
