An air conditioner keeps you comfortable in the summer. However, every home is different, so not all devices are the same. Use the guide below to find the right cooling system for your space when you need an upgrade.

What Are the Two Main Types of Central Air Conditioners?

In a traditional split system, the HVAC equipment draws warm air from the house and sends it into an outdoor unit. There, the air compressor uses a cooling agent called refrigerant to chill the air before sending it back indoors. The ductwork distributes the air throughout the home.

Unlike traditional central air, mini-split devices don't require ductwork. During installation, technicians create only small holes in the walls to accommodate wiring and connection cables. Much like split systems, mini-splits draw warm air out of the home and into an outdoor component. However, they have separate indoor units for each room, giving you individual temperature controls.

What Should You Consider When Choosing an AC?

However, if the property doesn’t have ducts, mini-split ACs provide effective and energy-efficient cooling without costly ductwork installation.

Then, remember to choose the right size, or cooling capacity, for the space. Cooling capacity is measured in British thermal units per hour (Btu/hr.). If the unit is too large or too small for your home, it won’t be efficient, potentially wasting energy or delivering insufficient climate control. HVAC contractors help you determine the right Btu/hr for the property.

To lower monthly energy costs, pick a model with a seasonal energy-efficient rating (SEER) greater than 15. Also, choose smart thermostats, which come with programmed temperature settings you can control through mobile devices. With these thermostats, you can create cooling and heating schedules based on your family’s daily routines, local weather conditions, and the cooling needs of individual rooms.
