There are locks at your home, in your vehicle, and throughout your place of work. Despite their ubiquity, many people aren’t fully aware of how locks actually function. While the following information won’t turn you into a skilled locksmith, it will increase your understanding of these important security mechanisms.

How Do Locks Work?

While there are many different types of locks (some of which are explained below), the basic door lock is perhaps the most well-known. These locks have a few simple, yet essential, components that keep your home safe and secure.

For a door lock to work, components must be installed into the door itself, as well as the door frame. The door component is called a mortise, and this is where the bolt is housed. The bolt slides into a metal component situated in a hole in the door frame, which reinforces the locking mechanism. Each lock has a corresponding key. When inserting and turning the key it interacts with internal tumblers, which engage and slide the bolt open or close.

What Are the Different Types of Locks?

locksmithIn addition to tumbler locks, there are also many other mechanisms used to keep things and people secure. They include:

  • Electronic Locks: Keyless electronic locks are a high tech option. These locks sometimes use a keypad, into which a code can be input, or they can use an electronic fob for entry. These are common at workplaces, where multiple people require access to the same secure rooms.
  • Padlocks: Padlocks are a simple mechanism with upper and lower metal pins that fall into a cylinder when locked. When a key is inserted, the pins are released and the lock is opened.
  • Combination Locks: In addition to keyed padlocks, some also take combinations. Padlock combinations can include numbers and letters to gain entry.
