What's the Difference Between a Cosmetologist & Esthetician?, Boston, Massachusetts

If you're considering attending beauty school, it's important to understand the differences between training programs before deciding on your field of study. While esthetics and cosmetology have similarities, their focus and career paths can differ greatly. To learn more about each discipline, consider the guide below.

Cosmetology is a broad term that encompasses a variety of different services in the beauty industry, including hair, skin, nails, and makeup. Like an esthetician, cosmetologists are required to complete a certified training program and carry a valid state-issued cosmetologist license.

In beauty school, students of cosmetology will typically learn how to wash, cut, style, color, and treat hair, including up-dos, and perms. They will also learn how to perform manicures and pedicures, apply makeup, administer facials, and apply skincare treatments. Once certified, a cosmetologist can move on to work in a hair salon, nail salon, barbershop, spa, or resort.

beauty schoolWhile cosmetology is comprised of many skillsets, a licensed esthetician has a more narrow focus, specializing primarily in skincare. Unlike cosmetologists, estheticians are required to complete advanced training in skin, including analysis in skin tone, texture, color, and complexion problems. They also learn about anti-aging treatments and laser resurfacing.

They perform a wide range of therapies, such as body wraps, scrubs, facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and acne treatments, in addition to hair removal, such as waxing, threading, or using depilatories. Like cosmetologists, an esthetician can be found working in a salon, a barbershop, or a resort setting. Due to their highly specialized field, they are also commonly found in medical offices working alongside dermatologists and plastic surgeons providing cosmetic skincare services.

A rewarding career in the beauty industry begins with a top-notch beauty school.
