Playing a round of golf can keep you outside for several hours of the day. Be sure to protect yourself from the sun’s harsh UV rays, as sunburns accelerate aging and increase cancer risk. If you have a tee time coming up, here’s how to stay safe while enjoying the game.

How to Avoid Getting a Sunburn When You Golf

1. Apply Sunscreen

Look for a broad-spectrum formula that’s designed to combat UVA and UVB rays. Opt for a product with an SPF 30 or higher, and apply it at least 30 minutes before going outside. Use at least an ounce of sunscreen to thoroughly coat your body and reapply with the same amount every two hours. Don’t forget to apply a lip balm with SPF too.

2. Use Shade

golfIf you aren’t up to tee, snag some shade in the golf cart to stay away from the sun’s potent rays. This will also allow you a bit of time to rest from the heat.

Wear a hat to shield your eyes from the sun. Both visors and baseball caps will suffice, so long as the bill is long enough to shade your face and prevent your skin from burning.

3. Wear Protective Clothes

You may spend a full day outside when golfing, so wear clothes that will shield your skin from harsh rays. Many brands offer products that have an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF), and this feature prevents potent rays from passing through the fibers. Look for clothes with a factor rating between 40 and 50 for optimal protection.

Once you have the right gear to protect yourself from sunburn, book a tee time at the Waikoloa Village Golf Club on the Big Island. This stunning course was designed by the famous architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. and offers dry and warm playing conditions year-round. To book a tee time, visit the website or call (808) 883-9621.
