Having a tire blow out when you’re on the road can be a daunting experience. You might hear a loud noise or feel a difference in the way the car handles. Many new vehicles also include alert systems that tell you when there’s a sudden loss of tire pressure. Before you can worry about a tire replacement or the impact on your vehicle, these steps can help you stay safe and get the assistance you need.

3 Steps to Take After a Tire Blow-Out

1. Slow Down Gradually

Many drivers have the immediate instinct to slam on the brakes or steer off to the side when a tire blows out. However, sudden movements can cause you to lose control of the vehicle since your tire can’t grip the road properly.

Instead, stay calm and try to maintain your momentum. Just let up off the gas pedal gradually, so you can slow down without swerving.

2. Veer to Safety

If you’re on the freeway, try to get off to the shoulder or right lane if you can safely do so. Turn on your hazards or use road flares to alert other drivers to your presence.

3. Call for Help

Unless you’re completely out of traffic and have a spare tire on you, call for help. A towing or roadside assistance company can either move your vehicle to safety or change your tire so that you can get to an auto repair shop. Then you can discuss your tire replacement options once you and your vehicle are both safely away from the area.
