Extreme weather negatively affects vehicles in many ways, including the tires. With some of the hottest days of the year still ahead, learn more about what these high temperatures can do to your wheels to ensure you take good care of them.

What Does Heat Do to Car Tires?

1. Rubber Degradation

Tires create friction with the road whenever they're in use, which generates heat. In hot weather, heat-related friction increases to accelerate rubber degradation. Additionally, road friction and exposure to direct sunlight cause the oils responsible for the rubber's flexibility to break down, leaving the material brittle and prone to cracks. Known as heat rot, these splits and cracks cause air leaks that can result in underinflation or even blowouts.

Protect your tires by parking the vehicle out of the sun as much as possible. Also, check the sidewalls frequently for cracks or missing rubber so you can schedule timely replacements.

2. Overinflation

While cold temperatures cause tire PSI to decrease, hot temperatures allow the air molecules within the rubber to expand. Overinflation increases the chance of blowouts and creates handling issues that affect the comfort and ease of your ride.

Use a pressure gauge to check your tire pressure every week or so during the summer if you drive often. Your car's driver side door jamb provides the recommended PSI, which you can also find in your owner's manual.

3. Tread Separation

Tires feature two layers: the inner section, or carcass, and the outer layer, or tread. While these layers typically stick together, heat and excess wear cause them to separate as the rubber loses its initial tackiness, especially when it's underinflated from leaks or a lack of maintenance. Unfortunately, tread separation while driving can cause you to lose control of your car, so be sure to inspect your wheels often.
