Leaky pipes are frustrating to deal with, especially if you don’t know why the leak occurred. Corrosion is often the cause of pipe failure, but several factors contribute to the rusting process. Learn more about a few causes of pipe corrosion so that you can identify issues early and work with a plumber to prevent serious leaks.

What Factors Lead to Pipe Corrosion?

1. Drain Cleaners

Though it may be tempting to use chemical drain cleaners on clogged pipes, these products can cause more harm than good. With repeated use, these chemicals are strong enough to damage your plumbing in addition to whatever is causing the obstruction. Most store-bought drain cleaners are oxidizing or caustic, meaning they work by sitting on top of the clog, which produces damaging byproducts within the pipe.

2. Low Water pH

plumberA low pH balance in the water will damage copper pipes, which are often used in residential plumbing. Water with a pH of 8 or higher will cause a thin film of copper oxide to form in the pipe. This film acts as a protective layer against corrosion.

However, if the pH level is 7 or below, the water becomes more acidic. The oxide barrier will dissolve under these conditions, which exposes the plumbing to corrosion.

3. High Oxygen Levels

Exposure to oxygen causes metal surfaces to undergo oxidation, a process where the metal transforms into rust and begins to thin and weaken. This process doesn’t happen immediately, but the rusting will happen faster if the oxygen levels are too high. This problem is more likely to occur in hot water lines than cold water lines because the heat from the water accelerates oxidation.
