If you own a classic car, you likely spend considerable time, energy, and money on your auto restoration project. If so, you should treat the vehicle well throughout the year. That includes maintaining it carefully during warm, summer weather, but also storing it properly when the temperatures drop. To help you do the latter, below are a few tips for storing your classic car.

How to Prepare a Classic Car for Storage

1. Refill Fluids

Remove old engine oil and fill the car with a fresh replacement. Also, make sure all other fluid reservoirs are full before storing the vehicle. This includes fuel, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Not only does this prepare the car for when you pull it out of storage, but it also minimizes the areas that can allow moist air to condense when the temperatures drop. That way, you reduce the moisture in your engine and prevent potential corrosion problems.

2. Inflate Tires

auto restorationCars that sit for long periods can develop flat spots on underinflated tires. During cold weather, these spots can become permanent and ruin the tires as the air pressure lowers. Therefore, always inflate tires to the recommended pressure, which you can find in the owners manual. If your car does not have this listed and you do not have an owner’s manual, consult an auto restoration expert.

3. Wash It

Never put a dirty car in storage. Always remove dirt, mud, tree sap, bird droppings, and other contaminants beforehand. These substances can cause paint damage, unsightly stains, and rust. Use a soft, clean cloth and a mild detergent to wipe away anything on the surface. Generally, a hose works better than a pressure washer to prevent scratching the paint. Make sure the stream isn’t too powerful and hold it away from the car when washing.
