Dental implants have restored your smile and confidence. With titanium roots and crowns made of porcelain or ceramic, the implants act like natural teeth—capable of chewing without the worry that they won’t stay in place. While they do function like regular teeth, they have different needs in order to stay clean.

What Are Dental Implant Maintenance Tips?

1. Use Nylon Brushes

After the procedure, you should change your toothbrush. Manual and electric brushes are still acceptable, but their bristles should be pliable and soft.

Nylon brushes are made for those with implants. Their bristles are soft and they should be used to brush the crown’s surface gently.

To clean the crevices between teeth and the areas around the crown and the implant, invest in a nylon-coated interdental brush. They’re entirely made of nylon and don’t have metal wires that could scratch the crowns or implants.

2. Floss Daily

Dental ImplantsThere are several types of floss that are designed for those with dental implants. By flossing daily, you’ll prevent plaque from accumulating. Be sure to floss gently, so the natural teeth, implant crowns, and gums aren’t damaged.

For individuals with fixed bridge dental implants, consider using floss with a built-in threader, as they are designed for cleaning around the bridge.

Oral irrigators are another effective flossing method. Waterpik® flossers reduce the buildup of plaque and help prevent gingivitis from occurring. Their tips are made to clean hard-to-reach areas of the implants without damaging them.

3. Avoid Dangers

Drinking and smoking contribute to socializing, but they pose a threat to dental health. It takes around six months for the implants to integrate fully. Excessive alcohol slows the healing process while smoking reduces blood flow to the gums, teeth, and bones. Even after they have fully bonded and healed, these bad habits will wear on natural teeth and implants alike.

4. Eat Carefully

Hard and sticky foods can weaken the structure of the implants. Avoid foods and beverages that include dry fruit, ice, hard candy, and caramel. Chewing hard foods will damage the enamel of natural teeth and the crowns of the implants. Sticky foods are difficult to remove from teeth and attract plaque, which can lead to gum disease. When consuming sticky foods, be sure to brush and floss as soon as possible.
