Air conditioners are complex machines that require a lot of moving parts to work efficiently. Recognizing when a core component is having issues will ensure you contact HVAC services before problems worsen, and it’s simpler than you may think. Below is a helpful guide to the most important features and the roles they play.

Understanding the Anatomy of an A/C Unit

1. Refrigerant

Refrigerant is a chemical that circulates in a sealed line in your system. It collects warm air inside your home and then releases it outside to support the cooling process. An A/C unit won’t work without it, so if you notice cooling has slowed or stopped, contact an HVAC service. Refrigerant is a colorless, odorless gas, and they’ll need to inspect the line for leaks. They can then seal the lines and ensure the refrigerant is circulating correctly again.

2. Compressor

hvac servicesThe compressor ensures that the refrigerant keeps moving in your A/C unit. It adds pressure and heat to the line so that it circulates and releases the heat it collects. Your system will become ineffective when the compressor breaks down. Your unit may vibrate or become noisy and will only blow hot air. Compressors are one of the most expensive components to replace, and in the case of older units, they often warrant a complete system replacement.

3. Condenser

Refrigerant isn’t able to expel the heat it collects on its own. Instead, the condenser uses finned coils to draw heat out of your system. It uses a large fan to accomplish this. A failing condenser is often marked by loud noises and poor cooling. There may also be more condensation on the unit or coils than usual.

4. Evaporator

Once the refrigerant has vacated its heat, it circulates to the indoor evaporator coils. There, it moves into copper tubes and collects heat from the passing air again. The blower system drives it again toward the condenser, and the cooling process continues.
