When purchasing or selling a boat, you need to consider its essential parts and how they function. This is especially true when it comes to the engine. That's because the engine affects the watercraft's performance, drive, and lifespan more than any other feature. To help you decide which model is best for your needs, below are the common types of engines and how they differ from each other.

What Are Common Types of Boat Engines?

1. Inboard Engines

These four-stroke engines are set up inside the boat's hull to control the driveshafts that are connected to the propeller. The boat's steering wheel controls the rudders, which are set up behind the propeller to determine which direction the boat will travel in. This setup minimizes power loss, creating reliable and consistent ramps, but the engine can compromise seating space when installed in the front of the vessel. As such, they are used mostly in sport boats.

2. Outboard Engines

boatsAn outboard engine is affixed to the transom of the boat along with its propellers and gearbox. Larger boats with outboard engines use a steering wheel to change direction, while smaller boats use a tiller steer. In general, outboard engines are easy to use and offer excellent fuel economy. Because they are installed outside the hull of the boat, it's easy to spot cracks and worn parts and fix them before they worsen. The location of the engine also allows you to use more of the space inside the boat, making them popular for catching fish.

3. Stern Drive Engines

Also known as the inboard-outboard engine, a stern drive contains features of both inboard and outboard engines. It has a four-stroke automotive engine inside the boat's hull, but you can also steer the engine toward a direction by maneuvering a steering wheel, which then turns the drive unit, also called the outdrive. Because they have quieter motors, stern drive engines are better for shallow waters.

4. Jet Drive Engines

Instead of propellers, this engine uses jet drive propulsions to thrust the boat forward. It works when water enters an intake from the bottom of the watercraft, then flows through an impeller-powered pump that is driven by the engine through a nozzle at high pressure.
