Once you’ve had water well drilling on your property and your water pump is hooked up, you have access to inexpensive, clean water. To keep the well in good condition and the water quality high, your well needs regular maintenance. While well inspections and repairs are a job for the pros, there are a few things you should do as the owner to keep the well at its best.

How to Care for Your Well After Water Well Drilling

1. Prevent Contamination From Runoff

One of the most common ways that well water gets contaminated is runoff from your yard. Any pesticides, chemicals, or fertilizers used on your property can get into the water. Sometimes the chemicals themselves are dangerous to people, and sometimes fertilizers can cause bacteria and algae blooms. To avoid these problems, never apply any of these chemicals near your well, uphill from it, or in areas where runoff can reach a drain or water source.

2. Pay Attention to Water Quality

Whenever you pour a glass of water, take a moment to check the color, smell, and taste. A little amount of cloudiness that settles out within a few minutes is normal. However, visible silt, red or brown colors, a sulfur or chlorine scent, or a metallic taste can indicate that the water is contaminated, or the pipes are damaged. If you experience any of these changes, contact your water well drilling company for maintenance. Your well company can also provide routine maintenance for your pump to keep it running efficiently and avoid problems with clogging and silt.

3. Schedule Water Testing
