If you have an older heating and cooling system and feel like it's time for an upgrade, have an HVAC contractor install a high-efficiency unit. This is a significant investment, but it'll benefit you in a variety of ways.

Financial Benefits

Having your HVAC contractor install a high-efficiency unit will provide you with year-round savings. Manufacturers measure the efficiency of an AC system with the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), so you can evaluate the system's ability before buying it. A higher SEER rating means the unit will use less energy to cool the same space, thus saving you money. While older air conditioning units typically have SEER scores of 10 or lower, newer energy-efficient systems offer SEER scores of up to 25.

Similarly, your furnace's energy efficiency can be measured with the annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating. If an older system operates with a 65% AFUE rating, that means your home is losing 35% of the energy your HVAC system produces. Most modern HVAC systems operate at a 98% AFUE rating.

Enhanced Comfort

Some systems also allow you to control which parts of the house are affected, so treated air won't go to guest bedrooms or other areas that aren't in use.

A newer model can also provide more comfort in terms of odor and sound. Your HVAC contractor will clean your ducts and registers when installing your new, thoroughly inspected unit, so any existing odors will be eliminated. Additionally, modern models operate quietly and, since one unit services the entire home, you won't have equipment in each room adding to the ambient noise.
