In preparation for residential water well installation, a contractor will go over the different types of water pumps available. The pump regulates water flow rate and pressure so water can be delivered to the plumbing system inside the house. Learn more about the differences between submersible and jet pumps to determine which is best for your well.

Submersible Pumps Push Water Out of Wells

Summersville-Missouri-water-pumpA submersible pump is completely submerged in water inside a well. A hermetically-sealed motor attached to the pump helps convert rotary energy into kinetic energy and pressure to push the liquid out of the well. Water flows into the pump through the intake. A rotating impeller directs the fluid through a diffuser to the ground surface.

Because submersible pumps are surrounded by water, they don’t have to be primed, and the sound of the motor is muffled. As water pressure pushes the liquid into the intake, this type of pump uses less energy than other models. That’s why the pumps are often used in deep wells and shallow installations.

Jet Pumps Suction Water Out of Wells

Jet pumps are located on the ground surface. The pump relies on suction to extract water from inside the well. The energy created by an electric impeller pushes water through a suction pipe and into the plumbing system. As jet pumps aren’t submerged in water, they need to be primed. A water pump with only one pipe is meant for shallow wells, while deep wells need two channels to suction water from depths of more than 25 feet.
