Throughout the course of any given cycle, a washer will produce a number of noises, from the filling of the machine to the churn of the agitator, or the spin of the tub to the drain of the water. These are expected and natural sounds for a washer, but when a machine emits unusual noises or is particularly loud, it's usually a sign that a washer part is broken or lose. Below, learn about three common washer parts that, when faulty, can result in a noisy machine.

Why Your Washing Machine Is Loud

1. A Bearing Problem

A bearing makes it possible for the washer tub to spin. It is a circular piece of metal with several tiny metal balls inside, which sit on a track within the bearing. However, a worn bearing will cause these balls to fall off their track, producing a banging noise that will worsen over time. The bearing could also be losing lubrication, which will cause the washer to emit a squeaking noise.

2. A Damaged Pulley

Due to continuous use from the motor and the various levels of strain from wash cycles, it can wear out or accumulate dirt or grease, making a squealing or thumping noise in the process. If the pulley gets dislodged, the noise will sound more like banging.

3. A Bad Clutch

The clutch is a washer part that works in much the same way as the clutch of a vehicle. It links the transmission of the washer motor to the tub, controlling the tub's spin so that it doesn't speed up or slow down too fast. A broken clutch will create a squeaking sound during the spin cycle of the machine.
