You have set aside the time to build your dream deck. Now you must set aside the right tools to make the job as smooth and stress-free as possible. Below are five of the most important tools to help you build the perfect deck.

What Tools Will You Need for Your Project?

1. Tape Measure

You will need at least a 25-foot tape measure that you can use to assess your boards correctly before cutting them. Always measure twice before cutting— once you start sawing, there is no going back. You don’t want to find that you have cut too much off of a board and have to scrap it.

2. Chalk Line

You don’t want to remeasure or second guess where to cut each board for your deck. Use a chalk line, and you will have a straight line every time. Just lift the string up and let go.

The chalk will snap onto the wood, exactly where you measured. It will also easily rub off and will not stain your wood. White or blue chalk are the safest colors to use. Sometimes, the dye in the red chalk can leave a semi-permanent stain.

3. Circular Saw

toolsWhile constructing your deck, you will use the circular saw more than any other tool. You want a powerful saw that makes clean, reliable cuts. A 7 ¼ inch carbide-tipped blade with a 10- to 13-amp motor should work perfectly for your project and will last longer than a steel blade.

4. Hand Saw

After you finish sawing all of your boards for the deck, you can put away the circular saw and take out your hand saw. This tool will give you more control over the details.

A hand saw works well for the edges of the deck and around your stairs. Make sure the saw is sharp before cutting into the wood, or you will have uneven cuts.

5. Power Drill

Once all the boards are in place, use a power drill to precisely position all of your screws. Similar to the circular saw, you will benefit from a carbide-tipped drill bit to help screw in the boards for a strong, safe deck. Depending on which type of wood you use, you may need to pre-drill holes where you plan to place the screws.
