Whether you’ve cracked a tooth or have gaps or discoloration, your dentist may recommend veneers as a solution. In addition to correcting aesthetic issues, these cosmetic coverings can boost your confidence by improving the overall appearance of your smile. Here’s more about dental veneers and their benefits.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made coverings that are permanently bonded to your natural teeth by a dentist. They correct problems such as chips, cracks, and deep-set stains, as well as enhance the size, shape, and structural integrity of the teeth. They can also be used to close gaps between the teeth.

How Do Dentists Apply Them?

dentistThe process for getting veneers is relatively simple and typically takes place over two appointments. At the initial appointment, the dentist will take a mold of your teeth and send it to a dental lab where the custom veneers will be created.

Once the veneers are ready, the dentist will first prepare your natural teeth by removing a small amount of enamel. Then, the veneers will be bonded to your teeth with dental cement. In many cases, an anesthetic may be used to manage pain during the procedure.

How Do You Care for Veneers?

In most cases, you should feel little to no discomfort and be able to eat and drink normally after the anesthetic wears off. Sometimes patients feel small, rough patches in their mouth that are caused by excess cement, but these go away on their own in a matter of days.

When cared for properly, dental veneers can last up to 15 years. Practicing proper dental hygiene keeps them in shape, so make sure you brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day. Never use your teeth to open packages or bottles, and refrain from chewing on items such as gum, pens, and ice.
