Stunning wood cabinets can be the centerpiece of a kitchen, and like all features, they’ll need regular care. Neglect can quickly make them an eyesore, which is why you’ll want to establish a maintenance plan. Below are essential do’s and don’ts to follow that will ensure your kitchen cabinets continue to look great.

Do:

Clean regularly.

Kitchen cabinets should be cleaned once a week. Grease buildup can collect quickly, especially on cabinets closest to the stove and backsplash where cooking oils, water, and other liquids may have splattered. Always wipe cabinets in the direction of the grain and use a soft cloth, so you don’t damage the paint or stain.

Be mindful of moisture and temperature.

Moisture doesn’t mix well with wood. While you can’t move cabinets near the sink, you can move coffee machines, steamers, and other appliances that produce steam and moisture to another area. Make sure you never drape wet towels on your cabinets and do everything you can to keep a steady temperature in your kitchen. Extreme heat and humidity can cause the wood to expand, warp, and crack. Long-term sun exposure can also  cause light damage to the wood. Consider using a box fan and opening a window to help ambient heat escape while you’re cooking.

Don’t:

Use harsh cleaners and tools.

Instead, use a DIY product. Create a mixture of 50% water and 50% vinegar in a spray bottle. Spritz your cabinets and wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid using wire brushes, scrubbers, and other tools that may scrape paint off.

Let spills sit.

Spills are going to become more difficult to remove the longer they sit, so wipe them up right away. Waiting too long will allow them to wear down the seal on your cabinets. Once they penetrate the wood, they can cause warping, stains, and other blemishes.
