If you need a firearm or knife to protect your home or business, it’s important to understand the relevant laws. This will ensure that your attorney can help safeguard your rights and that you stay out of danger. Here’s what you need to know.

Who Can Carry a Weapon?

While you don’t need a permit to carry a concealed weapon, you must be 21. However, you can get a permit in Alaska, which will be helpful if you go to another state with a handgun, for example.

attorneyIf you’re under the age of 21, you’re prohibited from carrying a weapon in most cases. If you need a gun or knife to protect yourself during outdoor activities, such as hunting or trapping, the state will permit you to have one. Additionally, you can carry mace spray or a pocket knife. Metal knuckles and switchblades, however, are illegal in Alaska.

What Are the Requirements for Getting a Handgun Permit in Alaska?

In addition to being 21, you must be a resident of Alaska, eligible under federal law to own a gun, and able to use the weapon safely. For example, you can’t have an injury that would make it dangerous for you to operate the handgun. Additionally, you’ll need to complete a competency course. Finally, if you took part in a substance or alcohol abuse program within three years of applying, you won’t be eligible.

Where Should I Avoid Bringing a Weapon?

While Alaska may not have laws about carrying a gun in most places, you should still avoid bringing one to hospitals, sports arenas, polling places, and gambling facilities. These types of institutions and areas may have administrative rules that prohibit weapons. Some stores may also have signs indicating that you shouldn’t bring a gun in.
