As much as we'd like to have our dogs with us as much as possible, sometimes travel plans require boarding. Choose a reliable kennel for your pet's stay, and your pooch will likely enjoy the time away. However, packing well can also make for a successful stay. Below, learn what to consider as you put your "doggie bag" together.

4 Aspects to Consider When Packing for Your Dog

1. Send Their Identification Materials

To help the kennel keep your pet accounted for, ensure that your dog has an adequate tag on its collar. The tag should include the dog's name and your phone number and address. If you have room in the bag, you should also include any special personality traits or medical conditions the dog has. For example, if your dog is food driven, you could have "will do anything for a treat" printed on the tag. Most kennels will ask you to fill out a form with your contact information, the name of a local contact, and your dog's veterinarian’s information.

2. Pack Comfort Items

You should take steps to make sure your pooch is as comfortable as possible by packing their dog bed or any other items they like to sleep on. You can also pack an article of clothing or a sheet or towel from home. The familiar scent will be reassuring to your pet.

While many kennels provide dog toys, nothing beats your dog's favorite stuffed animal or a knotted rope, so send these items along, as well. Also, include any chew toys that can occupy your dog. Just be sure the toys are safe and don’t have parts or squeakers that can be swallowed. Only send a chew toy that your dog has enjoyed in the past to avoid stomach upset.

3. Write Down Necessary Health Information

You should pack items and information that will keep your pet healthy during their time away. You should include any special personality traits or medical conditions the dog has. For example, if your dog is food driven, you could have "will do anything for a treat" printed on the tag.  Most kennels will also ask you to bring your dog's vaccination record.

If your dog requires specialty food, such as gluten-free kibble, pack enough food for the time of the boarding and print your dog's name, as well as the feeding schedule, on the container. While some facilities might offer to feed your dog their own food, switching diets can cause stomach upset and should be avoided while boarding, if possible. If your dog is on any medications, remember to pack these as well, along with clearly written instructions on dosage.
