No matter how glamorous the home, no homeowner is immune to clogged pipes. Plumbing problems do not discriminate, particularly not in New York City where even beautiful, iconic apartments are plagued with old and temperamental plumbing. Many renters are hesitant to call their superintendent to request the plumber to unclog their drain, so you're left with three choices: stand in two inches of water every time you shower, hire a plumber, or do it yourself!

Berk Trade & Business School is training the next generation of knowledgeable, hardworking plumbers, just as they have done since 1940. While the technical school teaches the plumbing trade to an advanced level, there are still plenty of do-it-yourself tips and tricks worth trying for an easy fix.

If you have a clogged drain in your bathroom or kitchen, consider some of the following tips from the trade school experts:

  • Before you go out and buy a snake from your local hardware store, look around for a wire hanger. You can create your own tool by making a hook to fish out any buildup which may be responsible for the clog.
  • Just like your high school volcano project, the fizzing action created from a mixture of baking soda and vinegar can also remove clogs!
  • Another useful chemical reaction is salt then baking soda then boiling water.
  • Before you scour your cabinets for useful ingredients, try pouring boiling water down your drain in stages.

If all else fails, you may need to call a professional plumber to resolve the clog. But remember, if you can avoid using harsh chemicals in your bathroom, it is always best to go for the natural solution. Berk Trade & Business School is passionate about technical careers in plumbing and electricity. Their students go on to meet their career goals and aspirations with the tools they acquired during their time at New York City’s best technical institute.
