There’s nothing like a refreshing dip in the pool to cool down on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, while swimming is a great way to destress and exercise, it isn’t so beneficial for your hair. Below, learn how to be proactive about your hair care to keep your locks healthy this summer.

What Chlorine Does to Hair

Chlorine is a gas that liquidizes when bonded with molecules such as sodium or calcium. In its liquid form, it is used as an antiseptic in facilities like pools, where it eradicates germs and bacteria and maintains a healthy, safe environment for swimmers. The same chemical that makes it a great pool water cleanser, however, can corrode hair. Chlorine can dry the hair shaft, causing it to become brittle, coarse, and prone to breakage.

How to Protect Your Hair

hair careMany facilities ask you to shower before entering the pool for hygienic purposes. But wetting your hair before getting in the pool can also protect it from chlorine. The hair shaft will absorb the tap water, making it less susceptible to chlorine infiltration and dehydration. A pre-pool rinse is even more effective if you condition your hair with a water-resistant hydrating cream as well.

Next, use a latex swim cap. Contrary to popular belief, these caps were not invented to keep hair dry. Their primary function is to reduce drag, which is essential for professional athletes and can prevent fallen hairs from clogging the pool drains. However, they can also minimize chlorine exposure. If you have long hair, put it up in a bun, braid, or ponytail before putting on the cap for a better fit.

After swimming, wash your hair with shampoo and ultra-moisturizing conditioner. You may need to wash it twice to get all of the chlorine out. Pay special attention to the scalp when shampooing and ensure no chemicals remain. Use a hair care mask at least once a week to nourish the hair and scalp and fortify it against chlorine and other damaging elements. If you can’t condition immediately after swimming, use a detangling spray to get out knots before combing with a wide-tooth comb.
