If you’re losing your hearing, hearing aids can help you enjoy all the friendships and social events that you normally do. While the hearing aids are a one-time purchase, the price of batteries can add up over time. To help you save money on hearing aid operation costs, follow the guide below for preserving battery power.

3 Tips for Making Hearing Aid Batteries Last Longer

1. Buy Smart

It might be tempting to buy batteries in bulk, especially if you find a great deal. However, batteries will slowly lose power the longer they sit on the shelf. Make sure the batteries you buy are at least a year before their expiration date, and when you’re breaking out a new pack, use the oldest ones first.

2. Store Well

Batteries in your hearing aids should also be kept at room temperature, and the battery door should be left open when not in use to prevent any excess moisture. Don’t store the hearing aids in the bathroom because of elevated humidity levels, and consider investing in a hearing aid dehumidifier that will remove any sources of moisture. Never remove the tabs on batteries before you’re ready to install them, as doing so can allow the air to activate the zinc in the battery, which  will start draining the battery.

3. Follow Instructions

When you’re getting ready to change your hearing aid batteries, wash your hands thoroughly first and dry them. Otherwise, dirt or moisture could transfer to the battery, potentially degrading it and the hearing aids. Because zinc batteries rely on air for activation, let the battery “breathe” for five minutes before installing it. This will extend the life of the battery by a few days.
