From receding gums to weak enamel, it’s not uncommon for individuals to experience changes to their oral health as they age. That’s why it’s important to visit the dentist at least once a year. A dental team will provide cleanings and additional treatments to remove bacteria and keep your natural teeth intact. During the exam, a dentist will also share at-home care advice to follow between appointments, including the tips below.

3 Tips to Maintain Good Dental Health

1. Floss After Meals

To prevent decay, gently floss teeth between meals. This will remove damage-causing bacteria along the gum line. Use enough floss to be able to wrap it around each index finger a few times. Gently maneuver the floss between two teeth until it reaches the C-shaped curve of the gum line. Move the waxy string away from the gum using up and down movements.

2. Use Toothpaste With Fluoride

dentistSince enamel wears away naturally as you age—which can be expedited by drinking soda and other acidic beverages—your teeth may become dark yellow or brown. This indicates that the dentin layer of the tooth is exposed and the enamel is fading.

To protect the remaining enamel, brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride-based toothpaste. When teeth absorb fluoride, the mixture of calcium and phosphate form fluorapatite. The mineral strengthens enamel to prevent corrosion.

3. Rinse With Antiseptic Mouthwash

In addition to flossing and brushing, a dentist will also recommend using an antiseptic mouthwash to prevent plaque from building along the gum line. Antibacterial mouthwashes will remove any harmful bacteria from between the teeth and wash away excess food particles. Use mouthwash at least once a day—preferably before bedtime—to coat the teeth with a protective layer to prevent decay.
