The moving process can be time-consuming and requires plenty of strategizing. While you may already have a game plan for packing up clothes, dishes, books, and other household goods, finding ways to safely transport larger furniture pieces should also be on your mind. Here’s a list of do’s and don’ts to ensure your valuables stay intact once on the moving truck.

Do:

Clean & Disassemble.

Before packing away furniture, take the time to clean and wipe down surfaces. Eliminating dust and allergen particles with a vacuum or cloth will ensure you don't bring unwanted bacteria with you to your new home or into a storage unit. Once thoroughly cleaned, disassemble bed frames, tables, bookshelves, and nightstands when possible. By taking these pieces apart, they’ll be compact and easier to transport. Plus, you’ll reduce the risk of damage to the furniture.

Use packing materials.

To protect your furniture from dents, scratches, and moisture, take care to wrap each item thoroughly in bubble wrap, packing blankets, and plastic wrap. Glass tabletops can be sandwiched between cardboard and wrapped in blankets or towels in order to reduce the risk of breakage. In addition to protecting your furniture, packing them in stretch wrap, packing paper, and other protective materials will also save your boxes and other items from getting damaged by pointy legs and sharp edges when in transit.

Don’t:

Apply adhesives directly to furniture.

Hudson-MovingApply bubble wrap and other packing materials very carefully around each piece. Avoid sticking packing tape directly onto upholstery, wood, glass, or other materials as you may damage the finish or be left with residue when you get to your destination to unpack and reassemble.

Wait until the last minute.

Give yourself plenty of time to properly pack your furniture. Keep in mind you’ll need time to clean, disassemble, and wrap each individual item. By waiting until the last minute, you may skip steps or forget to hold onto screws, bolts, and other fasteners, thus increasing the risk of damage and problems down the line.
