Bed bugs don’t discriminate and can even attack the most hygienic of people. This is especially true if you’re traveling. Vacation should be a fun and carefree time, and encountering these bugs can put a damper on your relaxation time. Fortunately, there are a few precautions you can take to stay bug-free.

A Guide to Bed Bug Prevention on Vacation

1. Recognize the Signs

In order to prevent exposure to bed bugs, it’s important to know what they look like. These creatures are about the size and color of an apple seed when they’re fully grown. They can also appear white or pale during the earlier stages of their life.

Keep an eye out for any brownish-red stains that could be bug droppings. These small marks also appear as the bugs become squished and are a clear sign of an infestation. Bed bugs also give off a sickly sweet, musty smell.

2. Know Where to Look

They can be found hiding in baseboards, behind peeling wallpaper, or behind pictures hung on the walls. Bed bugs also travel well, hiding in your luggage. If you suspect an infestation, do a thorough search of the room to inspect these potential hot spots.

3. Take Care of Your Luggage

There are a few precautions you can take to prevent bed bugs from stowing away in your luggage. Store your belongings on the counters in the bathroom or elevate it on a table or a metal luggage rack and keep your luggage off the bed until you’ve checked for signs of an infestation.

Keeping your belongings away from the floor, bed, and walls can help prevent these bugs from coming home with you after a trip. For extra protection, keep your clothes in ziplock bags. When you get home, wash your clothes on the hottest setting. You can also keep suitcases in the garage to be safe.
