Trailers are a convenient attachment for your truck when you need to transport items such as equipment, motorcycles, and more across any distance. Many vehicles have a setup for hitching with ease, but it’s good to know what you have and how to attach it safely. Here are a few tips.

How to Hitch a Trailer to a Truck

1. Know Your Hitch

Inspect your truck and ensure you have the right hitch and tow ball size for what you are connecting. The trailer will have information on it so you can match up specifications. Once that is set, test the height and make sure it stays parallel to the ground. If not, switch to an adjustable hitch that will level your connection, so the trailer and your vehicle are even.

2. Back Up Safely

First, raise the level of the trailer hitch so you can back in easily. Try to have someone help you back up your truck so you can easily match the hitch with the trailer. If you are driving solo, move slowly and get out of the vehicle every few feet to line up correctly. After you get in place, lower the hitch onto your tow ball hitch.

3. Lock It Correctly

trailerA secure lock is vital. Make sure the hitch is locked into the receiver with a hitch pin lock. Check that the coupler is latched completely onto the tow ball. Pull on the trailer tongue to test it out. If it comes off, reconnect everything from the beginning.

4. Check the Chains

Inspect the safety chains and ensure they are crisscrossed into in X off the ground but with a little slack for turning. This position protects the coupler if it becomes unhooked during transit. The crossed chains will catch the coupler and stop it from crashing onto the road below.

5. Handle the Cables

Inspect power cables for any damage, and then plug into the socket on the tow vehicle. Power cables should never drag on the ground or run under the coupler or tow ball. If the trailer has brakes, check that the breakaway cable is attached, so if it becomes unhitched, it will pull the pin out, causing the brakes to catch and slow down the trailer.
