House parties are a fun way to get friends and family together, have a few beers, and reminisce. However, if you aren’t careful, your guests could overdo it and expose themselves to undue risks, such as trying to drive home afterward. Here are a few tips that detail what you should—and shouldn’t do—when serving drinks at a house party.

Do:

Use narrow glasses.

Whether you are serving wine or pouring beer from a keg, limit the amount of alcohol you give each guest. To make this easy and inconspicuous, use narrow wine glasses and half-pint beer mugs instead of wide varieties that hold more. This way, you can see who is regularly returning for more and can cut them off if appropriate.

Serve food.

An empty stomach can shorten the amount of time it takes alcohol to affect a person, so serve food before the beer, if possible. If guests start drinking before the food is ready, provide filling snacks in the meantime. When comparing the blood-alcohol content (BAC) in partygoers who ate, versus those who did not, people with an empty stomach had BAC levels three times higher than those who ate first.

Don’t:

Allow the party to go on forever.

beerInstead of having an open-ended time for your party to end, set a time to keep people from staying and drinking more than they should. For instance, define a start and end time for your event, such as 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Also, do not start the party too early in the day. Guests may drink too much because they think that they will have enough time to sober up before leaving, which is dangerous.

Let people drive themselves home.

Excellent hosts never allow loved ones who have been drinking to drive themselves home. Offer to drive them if they are inebriated, or call a ridesharing service or cab. In addition to protecting your friend or family member from what could be a fatal crash, you also prevent the risk of the police charging them with driving under the influence.
