Putting together an alumni event to ask for donations is often a challenge, especially when you have a specific goal to meet. However, the more people you can get to participate, the easier it will be to achieve that number. Here are a few ways to reach out to your community to help your school reach its fundraising goal.

A Guide to Getting Donations for a School Fundraiser

1. Narrow Down Your Business Search

With websites like Facebook and LinkedIn, search for businesses in your area that are known for supporting schools and other community organizations. Local restaurants and grocery stores are often safe bets, whether they’re small and independent or part of larger franchises.

2. Craft Informative Messages

When reaching out to potential donors through their social media accounts, use just two or three sentences to explain that you’re looking for donations for the school by a specific date. Ask them if they’re interested and how you can reach the person responsible for handling donations. Include a short personalized message detailing what you appreciate about the business too; forming a connection will raise the chance of getting a response.

3. Use a Campaign

4. Have a Website

If you don’t already have one, create a website about the school, including its history, activities, alumni events, and a blog. Not only are you more likely to get donors interested in the school by offering more information, but you can also allow visitors to set up user accounts with which they can continue donating sporadically or even monthly.

Make the website more engaging with images of student life, like kids playing sports or accepting awards, to showcase what donations will be used for.

5. Offer Incentives

Many people are more likely to donate if they get something in return. Rewards can be something as small as a badge or ad space on your website to something more tangible, like an invitation to the next alumni event.
