Once your residential water system has been installed, you can begin enjoying the benefits of having your own well water. However, unless you take steps to care for the system, you won’t be saving as much money as you expect, and you’ll have to replace components much sooner. Here is an overview of best practices for keeping your system in top condition.

Do:

Get an annual inspection.

Once per year, a professional should inspect your residential water system for mechanical breakdowns and the efficiency of the system. The inspector should also test the water to ensure nitrates, bacteria, and other contaminants aren’t present. The water should be retested anytime you notice a change in the quality or if family members frequently experience gastrointestinal health problems.

Inspect the well cover and cap.

The cover of the well should be securely closed to prevent contamination of the well water. Caps can come loose over time, so be sure to check the well regularly. Have damaged or loose caps repaired by a professional as soon as possible.

Don’t:

Store hazardous materials near the well.

Even a small accidental spill can result in the contamination of your residential water system, so it’s best not to store anything near your water well. This includes paints, gasoline, motor oil, pesticides, insecticides, and any chemical-based product. If you suspect a foreign material has gotten into the well, have a professional determine if you require water well rehabilitation to correct the problem.

Let debris cover the well.

Over time, natural debris can cover the top of the well and hide it from view. This may involve the accumulation of snow, or it can include leaves and tall grass growing around the well in warmer months. If you can’t see the top of your well, you, or a landscaper, may accidentally hit it with a lawnmower, or another piece of machinery that’s strong enough to damage the cap.
