Spring means spring cleaning, but that doesn’t stop with a little sweep around the house. A good spring cleaning means inspecting your home’s systems and making sure they’re in top shape for the warm weather. It’s especially important that you check your electrical systems. If you don’t, you’ll be shocked by the damage they can do to your home!

Berk Trade & Business School has some tips for you to keep your electrical systems in check and practice good electrical safety around the house this spring, such as:

  • Checking Your Labels: Your electric service panel should have a label to let you know when your system was last inspected. If it’s time to inspect again, call a licensed electrician to make an appointment. While you’re at it, schedule an inspection of your furnace, since you won’t be using it much this season.
  • Taking a Load Off: Warmer weather means more stress on your home’s electrical system. Take steps to relieve this stress. For example: If your washer or dryer vibrates excessively, make sure it's properly seated on its surface. If it continues to vibrate, have it checked by a professional.
  • Burying The Dust Bunny: Lint and dirt can cause appliances like your dryer and refrigerator to work inefficiently or become fire hazards. Empty your lint traps and vacuum exposed coils to keep these appliances running and your home safe.
  • Minding Your Plugs & Cords: Spring cleaning is a great time to reposition your appliances away from sinks, bathtubs, or other fixtures which could put you in danger of electrocution. Make sure your cords and plugs are safely coiled or stored if they’re not in use. And of course, if any of your appliances’ cords are frayed and can’t be replaced, replace those appliances as soon as possible.

These tips will keep you safe and your electrical systems running this spring. But to really make sure everything’s running smoothly, call a trained electrician to check everything and make adjustments if necessary. When you ask where the electrician got their certification, make sure they say: “Berk Trade & Business School!” If you would like to learn the tools of the trade of New York City’s finest electricians, call Berk Trade & Business School at (718) 729-0909, and visit them online to learn more about their courses for technical careers.
