Powder coating is a type of dry painting or finishing process that uses electrically-charged fine powder to coat metal products. The process applies to all metal types, including steel, bronze, aluminum, copper, brass, and titanium. Here, learn more about this innovative painting option to determine if it’s right for your project.

Questions About Powder Coating, Answered

How does it work?

First, the sprayer tool gets connected to a ground wire to charge the powder particles. Once charged, the technician sprays the object as desired. The object getting coated features an opposite charge to the powder, which attracts the paint.

Next, the item undergoes baking at 400 F or more, depending on the type of powder to seal the particles onto the surface. While the electrical charge promotes powder adherence, the paint can be brushed off until the object is baked.

What objects typically get powder coated?

powder coatingSafety bollards used to manage and stop traffic frequently receive powder coating, as do metal patio furniture and fencing. Other common products include metal indoor furniture, auto, plane, and boat parts, light fixtures, plumbing components, sculptures and statues, lamp posts, and handrails.

Non-metal products such as glass, pottery, and wood can also be coated; however, they require curing with UV light, depending on their heat sensitivity.

What are the benefits of this process?

Once applied, powder coating provides a durable barrier that resists rust, scratches, chips, and damage from chemical solvents. It takes less time and creates less mess than paint due to lower overspray and waste levels.

Unlike spraying standard paint products, the dry paint does not include solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that harm the atmosphere. Additionally, any overspray can be swept up and reused.

How can I maintain coated surfaces?

Keep coated objects in good condition with a gentle cleaning schedule depending on whether the items are outdoors and how regularly they get dirty. Remove dust with a soft cloth and use a mild, diluted cleanser for deeper cleaning.

Never use chemical cleaners and solvents; however, you can use wax to maintain attractive products. Simply apply the wax in circular motions and wipe it off. Never paint a powder-coated surface to fix imperfections—opt for professional repairs instead.
