Whether you’re a collector or simply inherited some antiques from family, there may come a time when you need to store them. Whether you're moving or the furniture just doesn’t fit your style, proper storage keeps them in good condition so they retain their value—and can be passed on to future generations. Before you bring your antiques to a storage facility, keep these packing and storing tips in mind.

How to Safely Store Antique Furniture

1. Clean Before Storing

storage facilityWhen your antiques are in good condition before they enter storage, they have a better chance of being in the same state when removed. Before bringing them to the storage facility, thoroughly clean the furniture or accessories with appropriate cleaners, removing any dust, dirt, and grime. Consider using a wood or leather conditioner where appropriate to prevent pieces from drying out or cracking while they aren’t being used.

2. Disassemble When Possible

Although not all antiques can be safely taken apart and put together, if you can remove table or chair legs, drawers, or other parts, it’s worth doing so. This makes it easier to move large items without damaging them, and it allows you to maximize space in your storage facility. When you have more space, it’s less likely that parts will rub against each other or sustain damages. Just be sure to mark pieces and secure all hardware so everything can be reassembled later.

3. Use the Right Protective Materials

Plastic packaging material is ideal for wrapping fragile items like lamps and ceramics, but it’s not the best choice for wood. Covering wood (and upholstery) with plastic wrap can cause condensation and moisture on the item, which contributes to water damage, mold, and mildew. Instead, choose protective covers designed for the antique, such as protective furniture pads and blankets. These will protect your valuables against dust, nicks, and scratches while still allowing them to breathe.
