A pool is an amazing amenity to have in your backyard and can bring a family many cherished memories. To have a safe experience, however, there are some guidelines and rules you should follow closely. Utilize the following pieces of advice to keep your insurance premium down and your family and friends safe.

Do:

1. Add a pool gate.

A pool is a tempting space for kids to wander over to. An exposed pool area is dangerous and can lead to accidents. A child could easily slip and fall into the water or could wander down the pool’s steps without being able to swim.

Install a child-proof pool gate to ensure you’re always are in control of who goes near the pool. Installing a pool gate not only keeps your children safe, but keeps unwanted visitors out.

2. Teach your kids how to swim.

insuranceLearning to swim makes being in the water safer. Begin familiarizing your child with water when they under four years old. You can do this on your own by outfitting them with floaties and holding onto them as they splash around in the shallow end.

Children are typically ready to begin traditional swimming lessons at age four. This will help them develop skills needed to stay safe in the pool.

Don’t:

1. Leave kids unattended.

It’s never a good idea to leave your kids alone in the pool, even if it’s just to run inside to grab a drink. If you need to leave the pool area, ask another adult to watch them. Making sure they’re supervised will ensure someone is there to intervene or pull them from the water if an accident happens.

2. Create a habit of letting toys lie near the pool.

After a full day of playing in the pool, it can seem like a hassle to have to put away the pool toys. However, leaving them near the edge of the pool is a safety hazard. Both adults and kids could trip over a noodle or raft, causing a scary fall. Make it a habit to always put the toys away. Make it more fun for the kids by creating a game out of it.
