Heartworm disease is a parasitic infection that’s commonly transferred from mosquitos to dogs. Because of how serious it is, the American Heartworm Society recommends canines receive annual testing and year-round prevention efforts. There are different heartworm medications available to pet owners, which should be prescribed by a veterinarian. Here are a few options to consider.

How to Prevent Heartworm in Dogs

1. ProHeart® 12

This is an FDA-approved antiparasitic formula that veterinarians administer by injection underneath the skin. ProHeart 12 is given to healthy dogs that are over a year old and eliminates the need for pet owners to remember monthly treatments, as it’s designed to provide protection for 12 months. The medication’s safety has been extensively researched, with findings that show adverse reactions are rare and typically mild.

2. Heartgard® Plus

veterinarianThese are flavored or unflavored chewable tablets given to dogs once a month. The dosage of medication inside each pill is relatively low but effective enough to kill heartworm larvae before they become harmful.

Heartgard Plus has been deemed safe for adult canines and puppies over 6 weeks old. Side effects are uncommon, even in more sensitive breeds. An added advantage is that it can also be used to help control roundworm and hookworm infections.

3. Simparica Trio®

One of the newer prescriptions veterinarians offer for heartworm prevention is Simparico Trio. While the three main ingredients have been approved by the FDA individually in the past, this is the first time that approval has been given to use them combined.

This is an oral medication containing the antiparasitic drugs sarolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel. It not only provides heartworm protection but also kills ticks and fleas and manages roundworms and hookworms. It can be administered to adult dogs and puppies over eight weeks old or three pounds.
