While it’s true that siding is designed to be rugged and durable, it won’t last forever. At some point, you’ll need to replace your home’s exterior to ensure it is properly protected from the elements. If you’re not sure when the right time to schedule replacement is, look out for these signs.

How to Tell If Your Siding Needs to Be Replaced

1. You’re Constantly Repainting

While the expected lifespan will vary from brand to brand, most siding is formulated to last at least eight years without needing to be repainted. If you find yourself constantly repainting your home to improve its look, chances are it’s time for an upgrade. Peeling paint might seem like a relatively minor issue, but it could signal more serious problems with the material.

2. There Is Evidence of Mold Growth

sidingA small amount of mold can usually be removed before any serious damage occurs to your home. However, if you have problems with water flowing underneath your siding, mold growth could be rampant without your knowing.

Before you replace your siding, make sure any water damage issues are addressed. For example, cracked or broken gutters can cause water to flow down the side of your home instead of away from it, which will contribute to future mold growth.

3. You Have High Heating & Cooling Bills

Because of its insulating properties, siding plays a crucial role in keeping the interior of your home temperate all year long. If you notice your energy bills rising for no discernible reason, the problem could be with your home’s exterior. If there are cracks in the siding, you may also experience drafts throughout the home, particularly around windows or electrical outlets.
