School is out, temperatures are warm, and your kids are ready to play outside. Skip the high-tech activities and opt for some classic driveway games to keep them active and entertained. All you need is pavement and outdoor equipment to enjoy these games and make summer memories.

Driveway Game Ideas

1. Hopscotch

A little sidewalk chalk is all you need for this classic driveway game. Give your kids creative freedom as they design a hopscotch pattern on the driveway.

Young children might need an easy-to-navigate pattern, but older kids can enjoy a more challenging one that runs the entire length of the driveway. Give the kids a pebble to throw in one of the squares, and then let them hop all of that energy out.

2. Squirt Gun Fight

Nothing says summer quite like water play. Stock up on squirt guns and other water toys. Fill a small plastic pool or bin with water. Kids can throw on their bathing suits, fill up their squirt guns, and start playing. Games like squirt tag add a competitive twist to this refreshing driveway activity.

3. Jump Rope

pavementA jump rope is probably already in your garage, so pull it out this summer for some fun. Kids can start by learning basic jump roping skills.

Then, over the course of the summer, they can up their jump-roping game with heel-toe jumps or side-swing moves. A long jump rope can be used for a three (or more) player game, with two players turning the rope and the third jumping.

4. Relay Races

If you’re entertaining a crowd, you’ll have enough kids for relay races. Kids can participate in traditional running relays, along with more challenging three-legged races. The egg-on-the-spoon relay is always fun, although it can get your pavement a bit messy. Kids can also crab walk and bear walk around the driveway to see who does it the fastest.

5. Bicycle Wash

More water play fun can be enjoyed with a kid bicycle wash that’s perfect for the driveway. Have kids line up their bikes and riding toys in the driveway. Turn on the hose, fill a bucket with soap, and give everyone a sponge. Let them wash their riding toys until they’re sparkling clean.
